Writing The Best Page Titles

Each page of your website should have a unique title that helps search engines understand what your page is all about. A page title is a <title> tag that appears at the top of your HTML/XHTML document inside the <head> tag and has the following syntax:

<title>Title with Keywords </title>

To make it relevant for search engines, it’s important to include keywords that best represent the content on that page. As it shows up in search results, it also lets people decide whether to visit your site or not. Below are a few other points that you need to consider while creating a page title:

  • Your page titles must be short and contain maximum 70 characters (maximum). Recommended length is 50-55 characters including spaces.
  • You title should contain relevant keywords that best describe your page. It is important in terms of both SEO and user-friendliness.
  • It’s recommended to place the important keywords closer to the beginning of the title.
  • Create a unique title for each page as duplicacy can ruin your SEO
  • If you run a local business, add your location name in your title to keep it targeted to local users.
  • While 55 characters leave no scope for being more descriptive about your products/services, try to make it as clear and engaging as possible to increase click-through rates.

Meta-title and meta-description are together referred to as meta-tags. These are the great mediums for marketers to tell search engines what the site is all about. Short and crisp, but descriptive and engaging meta-descriptions provide opportunity for increasing click-through rates. Below is the syntax of both the tags:

<meta name=”title” content=”Page title”>

<meta name=”description” content=”Page description”>

Following are a few other points that you need to consider while creating meta-tags:

  • The recommended length of a meta-title is 55 characters (maximum 60) and of meta-description is 150 (maximum 160).
  • Each page of your website must have a unique meta-tag.
  • Include relevant and specific keywords in your meta-tag to let search engines and people identify the purpose and relevancy of your page.
  • Keep the meta-description short but powerful and attractive.
  • Adding a compelling call-to-action in your description such as “Visit this website to” or “Give us a Call at” increases the chances of people visiting your site.

Writing page titles and meta-tags while following above mentioned guidelines will definitely boost your On-page SEO efforts.
